Every home should be built with universal design concepts in mind

Those who read my 50PlusToday online magazine often know I am a passionate advocate for universal design and aging in place. Regarding grab bars, there are many beautiful designs from which to choose that don’t look like the old-fashioned grab bars.

I firmly believe EVERY towel bar should be a grab bar. They are helpful for every single person, regardless of age or ability. Anywhere you have water is a place where you can easily slip and fall.

The problem with suction grab bars

If these safety accessories are built in when the house is newly built or renovated, it’s easy to install them with the necessary support.  If you decide to add grab bars later, it’s a bigger deal and the process cam be costly. I see people opting at that point for the suction grab bars at that point to save money. Don’t do it. Suction grab bars have many limitations. For example, they are not approved by the ADA to work as a standard grab bar and are not intended to support the full weight of someone; they are meant only to provide support to help with balance issues. Also, like most items with a suction cup, they lose their grip after some time. Will you remember to test it every single time to make sure it’s still holding? It’s not worth the risk.
