Do you want to age in place? Do you like this option for your parents? For me, the answer to both questions is yes. Growing older at home offers a sense of familiarity, security, and independence I crave. However, it is unfortunately easier said than done. Aging in place requires careful thought, advanced planning, and in many cases, home renovations to make this desire a reality. Why do so many people wait until it’s too late?
According to AARP’s 2021 Home and Community Preferences survey, eight in ten adults aged 50Plus want to stay in their homes and communities as they age. Is this a realistic option for most? Factors such as health, finances, and home accessibility greatly influence whether or not we can make it happen. This study also shows that of the adults who are caregivers to someone living on their own, nearly half have concerns about the ability of the person they care for to continue living independently in their home as they age.
When is the right time to start preparing to age in place at home? Many people don’t want to think about the challenges they might face in the future. I get that. They don’t want to acknowledge possible physical changes and therefore don’t consider taking action to ensure staying at home is an option until it’s too late. What does it truly entail to remain at home safely and independently?
