Are You Drinking Enough Water in the Winter Months?

Are You Drinking Enough Water in the Winter Months?

Winter dehydration

Yes, that’s right winter is here and so are the colds, flu, allergies, and other bugs trying to get you.  As the temperatures drop and the layers add on, we face the same issue as in the summer, dehydration.  All of the things we do to stay warm during the winter lead to lots of unrealized sweat and fluid loss, much like playing in the pool during the summer.  This winter dehydration sets us up to feel more aches, eat extra food for energy, and even catch the current “flurona” bug going around. Drinking a little warm tea helps, but warm water with lemon and electrolytes do far more to keep the aches, snacks, and bugs at bay.

How to avoid “snackcidents

Amazingly, your brain consumes massive amounts of calories, oxygen, and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) as you ask it to multitask on multiple projects, texts, random cat videos, and at the same time simply keep you alive.  Over the course of an 8-hour workday, it will burn through 128 calories and close to 400 calories the entire day.  And don’t forget the massive amount of B vitamins, magnesium, and other micronutrients it uses as stress demands go up. You hear about electrolytes as a needed thing for sports performance, but they are even more essential for job performance and daily life.  Water and basic minerals (magnesium, calcium, potassium, sodium)  keep your brain lit up so you can think clearly.  Becoming just 1% dehydrated reduces your brain function by 10% and increases your caloric needs by 5% leading to daily “snackcidents”.  Make sure to keep your glass filled with mineral-rich water to stay hydrated in winter and your body with nutrient-dense organic foods.

Stay hydrated in winter

January also means resolutions, and the number two top ones for people every year are weight loss and better health.  Without the right amounts of fluids, electrolytes, and nutrients in your body and cells to release toxin-filled fats safely out of your body, both are impossible to attain.  Extreme weight loss while dehydrated can lead to kidney stones, gall stones, and illness due to toxic overloads in your liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system.  In the immortal words of Bruce Lee, you must “be like water”. (Bruce Lee’s famous “be like water” quote means you need to be as resilient and multifaceted as water…in other words, become soft with life and flexible with change.) Equally  important, you must drink enough every day to flush the bad stuff out of your body while allowing the good to flow in to restore your health.  Drink to your good health every day! If unable to drink enough water, get hooked up with an IV to ensure you stay hydrated, nourished, and live better every day.

Winter Health Tips

  1. Cover your mouth, hands, and health. Sneezing, coughing, and wiping are the 3 best ways of spreading around an unwanted gift that keeps on giving. Cover your mouth, wash your hands, and stay away from those that don’t.
  2. Feed a cold and starve the flu. Colds come on when you get run down, so sleep and eat to stay fueled up.  Flu can infect you and take you down after you’ve been run down so purge it from the system with heat and water.
  3. Stay hydrated, nourished, and moving.  Cold weather will make you want to hibernate but exercising and moving daily keeps you from getting a chill or putting on extra weight. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated in winter, as cold-weather gear and heated blankets make you sweat as much as you did in the Summer.  Take care when on a weight loss program as cutting back too much can result in getting run down
