AUGUST 2021 SECOND ACT OF THE MONTH AWARD

Each month, we give the 50PlusToday SECOND ACT Award to an individual who made an intentional decision to change gears in this phase of life. It’s our goal to recognize and support people who reinvented themselves at age 50Plus and we choose recipients who are creative, innovative and inspiring to others. Their pivot might involve a new career, business, community effort or lifestyle. A successful, happy and meaningful life means different things to different people; reading what others did might start you thinking about your next journey! Amy’s Journey...

50PlusToday asked Amy Jones questions about why and how she chose to make her career change. Here’s what she told us:

50PlusToday: What did you do before starting your entrepreneurial journey?
AJ: I was in elementary school – wink. I began my entrepreneurial journey at age 12.

50PlusToday: Tell us about what you are doing now (and for how long)
AJ: In December, 2019, I made the decision to move to Mérida Mexico and began a travel and lifestyle blog. The goal of Life in Mérida is to provide information for day to day needs about moving to and living in Mérida Mexico.

50PlusToday: What passion led you to start this new endeavor?
AJ: After moving to Mérida myself, I found it almost impossible to find details and facts about daily life here. Other expats reported needing resources and day to day tips as well.

Equipped with this information, I had a theme for my blog. I write about all the boring stuff, as I call it, that no one else wants to write about. I provide guidance and advice, based on facts and feet on the ground experience, which is absolutely essential to navigate life here. I wish someone provided me with this type of information when I first arrived.

50PlusToday: How does your age and experience help in your success?
AJ: My entrepreneurial journey over the last 42 years taught me many things. Success is relevant to one’s experiences, and for me, it is not about money. My definition of success comes from being able to help someone find a better quality of life.

50PlusToday: What unique skills did you have from previous job/business/lifestyle that help you in this new position?
AJ: For 30+ years, the focus of every business I started was customer service. My love for travel set the foundation for living in other countries as well. Combining these skills and passions when I moved to Mérida felt like the right fit.

Additionally, my ability to listen to the needs of others allows me to provide support and custom solutions. Listening well is something that comes naturally to me and I’ve done it my whole life.

The biggest reward? Helping others while continuing my journey.

50PlusToday: What advice would you give someone in this age group searching for their meaningful second act?
AJ: When you feel that urge to do something different – just do it! Others who may designate themselves as “a voice of reason” may try to talk you out of what you want to do. Don’t let them if your heart tells you it’s right.

Don’t pay attention to unsolicited advice or any advice that doesn’t support your intuition.

Go with your gut!! Learn to live a life of no regrets.

Change is hard and many of us have a fear of the unknown. Take a leap of faith to find out what’s on the other side is worth it.

Three random facts about Amy:

  • In the early 90’s, I worked at Harrod’s in London in the Christmas card department. During the time I worked there, Princess Diana requested that we (the staff) remove all the price tags from her purchases. It was exciting.
  • I lived and worked in the Riviera Maya area of Mexico for part of 2006-2007 selling golf course lots. While there, I had the chance to be a ball spotter for the PGA Mayakoba Golf Classic.  A once in a lifetime opportunity.
  • On my first visit to Mérida, I fell in love with the city. My inner voice said, “This is your new home – move as soon as you can.” Three months later I sold all my things and moved. A decision that I will never regret.
