Every home should be built with universal design concepts in mind. I have very strong opinions about home safety!

Those who read 50PlusToday often know I am a passionate advocate for universal design and aging in place. Regarding grab bars, there are many beautiful designs from which to choose that don’t look like old-fashioned grab bars. I firmly believe EVERY towel bar should be a grab bar. Grab bars are helpful for every single person, regardless of age or ability. Anywhere you have water is a place where you can easily slip and fall.

Grab Bars Should Be Installed Permanently and Correctly

Installing grab bars correctly involves anchoring them to wall studs or using secure mounting hardware. This requires some knowledge of wall structures and appropriate tools. Professional installation is recommended to ensure that the grab bars are correctly placed and provide reliable and necessary support. Grab bars that are permanently installed can handle significant weight. They are typically made of metal, like stainless steel or brass, which makes them highly durable and long-lasting. Keep in mind that when building or renovating a home, it’s easy to install these safety accessories. If you decide to add grab bars later, it’s a bigger deal and more costly.

The Problem with Suction Grab Bars

I often see people opting for suction grab bars to save on effort and expense. Don’t do it. They have many limitations. For example, suction grab bars are not approved by the ADA to work as standard grab bars and are not intended to support the full weight of an individual. They are meant primarily to provide support to help with balance issues. Also, unlike permanent grab bars, suction grab bars are usually made of plastic or rubber, which are not as robust as metal and can deteriorate over time. Finally, like most items with a suction cup, the cups lose their grip after some time. Will you remember to test it every single time to make sure it’s still holding? It’s just not worth the risk.
