Review by ANISSA TELLE

A Bend of Light by Joy Jordan-Lake is an outstanding work of historical fiction featuring multiple mysteries set in Maine post-World War II (1950).

Amie Stillwell found her freedom photographing the war. Now back in her idyllic coastal hometown, albeit reluctantly, she starts anew and works to escape her tumultuous past. However, she finds herself plagued by demons and forced to unravel untold secrets.

Jordan-Lake weaves a journey that causes Amie to delve into why the unexpected keeps occurring. From an abandoned boy to a murdered society woman, to the return of a long-lost neighbor, and still more, Jordan-Lake keeps the reader invested in these events. Through it all we witness the growth and untold bravery of Amie as she navigates her past colliding all too quickly with her present.

The combination of memorable characters and unexplained circumstances, along with the richly lyrical dialogue and landscape of coastal Maine, makes A Bend of Light a must read. Be prepared to be transported with a fabulously satisfying story full of intrigue, deception, and tough choices as Amie navigates finding the truth. Her strength and resilience draw her into the undercurrent of the tragedies occurring all around her.

Be careful not to get too complacent as the outcome of the story will surprise you. This unexpected ending is one only the most masterful of mystery writers can skillfully execute and Jordan-Lake showcases her gifts yet again in this arena.

I was provided a free advance reader copy from Lake Union Publishing in exchange for my honest review.  The opinions shared in this review are my own.
