Lingerie for Older Women
When was the last time you purchased some new lingerie? For me, it’s been a very long time. As I looked through my drawers recently, I noticed the pretty little lingerie pieces that I haven’t been comfortable wearing in years but held onto for some reason. I decided it was time to get some new ones that I might enjoy wearing at this stage of the game. But what does lingerie for older women look like? Is it even appropriate for mature women to wear lingerie?
Here’s what I think. There is no age limit on feeling confident and beautiful, and women of any age have the right to wear whatever makes them feel good about themselves, including sexy lingerie. However, some women our age may not be comfortable wearing the same styles they did when younger. Our bodies change, so it makes sense to alter the styles we wear to accommodate those changes if we want to. The lingerie a mature woman chooses to wear is a very personal decision.
The good news is that society’s perception of beauty and fashion is changing. Many lingerie brands are recognizing this shift away from ageism and are designing intimate apparel that caters to women of all ages, body types, and preferences. Later in this article, you’ll see we included pictures of a variety of lingerie styles women over 50 are wearing today.
What is the Difference Between Lingerie and Underwear?
There is definitely a big difference between lingerie and underwear, though they both serve as undergarments. Lingerie is more about expressing sensuality, beauty, and elegance, while underwear is primarily about functionality and everyday wear.
Lingerie brings out romance and excitement. It’s the glamourous friend specifically designed to make you feel extra special and beautiful. In contrast, underwear is an everyday essential. It’s all about providing a cozy and practical layer between your body and your outer clothing. Sure, you can buy sexy underwear, but the priority is it has to be practical and comfy. I have to add, though, that another important factor in choosing my underwear is that they don’t create panty lines (I hate panty lines.)
What to Look for in Lingerie for Older Women
When thinking about lingerie for older women, consider comfort, fit, and style. As we age, our bodies undergo changes, and our preferences might shift. Ultimately, the most important aspects are personal preference and comfort. Here are some things to look for in lingerie for older women:
For lingerie for women over 50, we recommend you opt for soft, breathable fabrics that feel gentle against your skin. Cotton, modal, microfiber, and silk blends are excellent choices as they can help prevent irritation and discomfort. Bamboo is another good option, especially for those with sensitive skin, as it is hypoallergenic and has antibacterial properties. Polyester offers a silk-like feel and is comfortable, but may not breathe as well as the other fabrics. If you prefer lace lingerie, look for pieces with a cotton lining. If possible, it’s a good idea to try on different options to see which feels best to you.
Lingerie for mature women is very personal. Some like skimpy and sexy, while others go for more coverage. Shapewear is also a consideration for some to offer control and smoothing. Comfort is vital, but not at the expense of style. Lingerie for older women can definitely be both comfortable and attractive, with elegant lace, classic prints, and flattering cuts.
Comfort is subjective and what feels comfortable on one person may not feel the same on another. Here are some general recommendations for comfortable lingerie. Start with lingerie made from soft and breathable fabrics which are gentle against the skin and allow for proper air circulation. Ensure your items fit well, not too tight or too loose. Pay attention to the trims and embellishments; avoid sharp or abrasive edges, and opt for lingerie with smooth, soft, or covered trims, especially around the leg openings. Finally, look for lingerie with tagless labels or labels printed onto the fabric. This prevents tags from scratching or causing irritation on the back or sides.
I prefer easy-care pieces that I can throw in the washing machine with similar colors and wash on a gentle cycle and/or in a lingerie bag. Unfortunately, most lingerie seems to be handwash only, so this is one area that may require compromise.
Proper sizing in lingerie is crucial for comfort, support, and overall satisfaction. If possible, you should try on lingerie in-store before purchasing. This will give you a chance to assess the fit and comfort, ensuring you’re happy with your choice. If buying online, consult size charts to see how their sizes correspond to your measurements. Different brands may have slightly different sizing, so it’s essential to check for each one. And by all means, if purchasing on the web, read customer reviews carefully.
Price, of course, is generally a consideration when buying anything, and that includes lingerie for women over 50. But it’s not the only factor to consider. If the lingerie is for a special occasion, you may decide it’s worth the price to treat yourself to something luxurious. Higher-priced lingerie may feature better fabrics, intricate lacework and unique designs. If these elements are essential to you, you may overlook the steep price tag. However, keep in mind that while higher-priced lingerie from reputable brands often reflects higher quality, it’s not always the case. Some mid-range or budget-friendly lingerie can still be of good quality and provide comfort and support.
Tips For Buying Lingerie for Mature Women
When you are buying lingerie for yourself or someone else, it’s essential to select items that make the wearer feel beautiful and confident. Lingerie is not age-specific, so anything goes. No matter the age of the person, lingerie is a form of self-expression.
Buying Lingerie for Yourself
Buying lingerie for yourself can be a delightful and empowering experience. Embrace your body and shop with confidence. Remember that lingerie is meant to celebrate and enhance your natural beauty. This purchase is all about you. Keep in mind that while new lingerie can be a pleasant surprise for a partner, you should prioritize buying pieces that make you feel good about yourself.
To find lingerie that fits well, is comfortable, and accentuates your best features, try them on before buying if at all possible. Stay open to trying different sizes as different brands may size their items somewhat differently. We recommend you inquire about the store’s return policy in case you get home and decide you don’t like it. If you find lingerie online that you like, it’s essential to check the size charts and compare them to your measurements. Read the reviews carefully as you will find information about quality, sizing, comfort, and more. Familiarize yourself with the return policy just as you would at a local retail store to ensure you can exchange or return if the item doesn’t meet your expectations.
Buying Lingerie as a Present
Buying lingerie as a present for your wife can be a thoughtful and intimate gesture. It’s not always easy though to buy what some might call “mature wife lingerie”. The most crucial aspect of buying lingerie for someone else is getting the right size. Sneak a look at her existing lingerie or check her dress size to get an idea of her measurements. You also want to take note of her existing lingerie style preferences. Does she like classic and elegant pieces, or is she more into playful and adventurous designs? Finally, choose comfortable fabrics made from soft and breathable high-quality fabrics. In case the lingerie doesn’t fit perfectly or she doesn’t like it, it’s a good idea to buy from a store that allows for easy exchanges or returns and keep the receipt.
Types of Lingerie for Women Over 50
What are the different types of lingerie for women over 50? The lingerie category encompasses items such as teddies, slips, babydolls, robes, and pajama sets that are available in a wide variety of colors and sizes. Some people include bras and panties in the lingerie category as well, but these are topics addressed separately.
Teddies are one-piece garments that cover both the torso and crotch. The style is similar to a one-piece swimsuit or body suit but is typically looser and sheerer. The easiest way to put on a teddy is to step into the leg holes and pull the garment up to cover your torso. Some open at the crotch so the wearer may use the restroom without completely undressing. Teddies come in many different colors and sizes and women of all ages love them! Here are a couple of examples.

What Changes Affect Our Choice of Senior Lingerie?
Most of us view life differently at this phase of our life than we did in our younger days which affects our choice of senior lingerie. For example, I have more disposable income now than I did when younger so I am able to occasionally buy luxury items like expensive lingerie for myself. I am also more comfortable in my own skin at this age and care less about what other people think. That means I wear what I like without questioning if I am “dressing my age”. I choose my lingerie, and all my clothing actually, based on how I feel while wearing them.
Despite having more confidence now than when younger, the changes in my body from hormones and other factors influence my purchase decisions. Over the years my skin lost some of its elasticity and my breasts now sag. My tummy is not exactly flat anymore. Furthermore, I am not as flexible as I used to be so I don’t want to contort my body to get into my lingerie. For these reasons, I gravitate toward nightwear that I can take on and off easily. I also need clothing with adequate breast support and that includes lingerie. I stay far away from super tight lingerie, preferring to stick with soft free-flowing nightgowns. It’s more about comfort for me than vanity, but I’ll admit I do like to cover up a bit more these days than in my younger days.
Mature Lingerie is About Choice Not Age
It doesn’t matter how old you are, wearing mature lingerie should absolutely be based on personal preference, not age. Don’t be afraid to try new styles or designs and have fun exploring unique options! If you feel comfortable and empowered in sexy lingerie, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t wear it. Self-expression and confidence are key, and everyone should feel free to wear whatever makes them happy and confident. It’s crucial to remember that beauty knows no age, and each person’s individuality should be celebrated and respected.
Are there any tips for choosing the right size and fit for lingerie as an older woman?
It’s important to check the size charts and compare them to your measurements. We recommend you purchase in a retail store rather than online if possible so you can try on different pieces to see what works for you. A salesperson familiar with the brands they carry can help fit you for your lingerie.
Are there lingerie brands that specifically cater to older women?
Some lingerie brands do offer collections designed for older women, considering factors like comfort, style, and support. However, many mainstream brands also have a wide range of options suitable for seniors.
Can I wear lingerie with more intricate designs or lace as I age?
You bet. You can wear whatever makes you feel confident and attractive. The decision about what type of lingerie to wear is all about you.
What are some lingerie materials that feel comfortable on aging skin?
Cotton, modal, microfiber, bamboo, and silk blends are fabrics that help prevent irritation and discomfort.
Are there any lingerie trends or colors that are popular for older women?
Lingerie trends and colors for older women often reflect a balance between classic styles and modern elements. Many older women gravitate toward slips/chemise nightgowns, which offer a touch of sophistication and elegance combined with comfort. Tasteful lace details that enhance the overall look are also popular in this age group. Some older women find delicate floral prints appealing, and others prefer neutral styles. That said, you should wear what you like! Your lingerie should reflect your personality and make you feel beautiful.
